When I lived in NY, I've only had brunch once @fiveleavesny after waiting 90 minutes for the popular spot so imagine my delight when @timeoutla gave me my next assignment at newly opened @fiveleavesla
You're greeted by a beautiful bar, rose gold-tinged light fixtures, copper mirrors, and salmon colored booths. Think art deco x Palm Springs vibes. I felt super relaxed as the dishes came out of the kitchen one by one.
The arctic char gravlax was cured perfectly and made for a great bite when piled onto the marble rye bread with a dollop of caper cream cheese.
The Duroc pork chop had nice seasoning and was cooked a nice medium-rare despite its thiccness. Impressive. Resisting the addictively crispy chicharrones was a futile attempt.
The black kale salad had such umami flavor. The chef explained the combo of aged gouda and anchovy dressing - mystery solved.
One of my favorite bites was the shepherd's pie. It didn't need the roasted root veggies on top. Just take your spoon and dig up a heaping pile of ground lamb, potato chunks, and tomato sauce. Hearty and comforting like a bowl of great chili. Next time I visit, I'm just going to get a bowl of this.
The grass-fed burger meat has bits of short rib along with chuck which made for a juicy and clean tasting patty. Super simple with gruyere without too many accoutrements.
As for cocktails, go for the refreshing Super Moon: gin, lemon, passion fruit, Manzanilla sherry, fennel, orange bitters, cinnamon.
There is also an outdoor patio - perfect for my laptop and a latte.
